Pronounced pi. Pronounced pi. The pronunciation is the same as that for the character pronounced pi (falling-rising tone).
According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is a type of water bird. Chen Cangqi states: It resembles a wild duck but is smaller in size; its feet and tail are connected, preventing it from walking on land, so it remains constantly in the water.
The Expanded Guide to Words (Guangya) states: The pi-ti is the same as the hu-ti. It also has names such as xu-luo, shui, and you-ya.
Additionally, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), its pronunciation can be bo-e, which is the same as the pronunciation for the character pronounced nie (falling tone). It can also be bi-yi, which is the same as the pronunciation for the character pronounced pi (falling-rising tone).
