Pronounced pi (falling tone)
In "Explanations of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi)", the pronunciation is noted as pi (falling tone) and pimao (falling tone), sounding similar to "pao". It refers to applying lacquer over a layer of ash.
Also, in "Tang Yun", the pronunciation is noted as bo (falling tone) and jiao (falling tone), sounding similar to "pao". It refers to blackish-red lacquer.
Furthermore, in "Zi Hui", the pronunciation is noted as hu (rising tone) and wan (rising tone), sounding similar to "huan". It refers to using lacquer mixed with ash to decorate objects.
Note: The original "Explanations of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi)" had a separate section for the radical "桼". It has now been merged into other radicals.
