Hai Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Bone (gǔ) Character: Pian Kangxi Strokes: 18 Page 1449, Entry 34 Pronounced pian (rising tone) according to Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun). According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it means ribs joined together. Duke Wen of Jin had joined ribs. Commentary: Xu says this means the ribs are united as one. The character for joined callouses is the same; it is now written separately as pian, which is incorrect. Discourses of the States (Jinyu) says: Hearing of his joined ribs, he wished to observe his appearance. Commentary: Pian means joined or together. In Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), it is written as the character for paired.
