Shuowen defines it as "to rob or plunder". The character is formed from the radical Power (lì) and the phonetic component piāo. Guangyun defines it as "to forcefully seize". Yunhui also states that it is interchangeable with the character piāo. In the Biography of Jia Yi from the Book of Han (Hanshu), there is a record of officials being robbed and deprived of their wealth.
