Si Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Water (shuǐ) Entry: 洀 Kangxi Stroke Count: 10 Page 619, Entry 14 According to Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced zhou. Refers to the texture of water. Also, according to Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Zihui), pronounced pan. Identical to the character for basin (pan). From Guanzi, Questions (Xiaowen): Duke Huan of Qi asked, When I ride out, the tigers see me but do not dare approach; what is the reason for this? The response was, Surely you were riding a piebald horse, circling and hovering, running against the sun? A piebald horse can devour tigers and leopards, so the tiger is suspicious and afraid. Commentary: The character 洀 is an ancient form of the character for basin (pan).
