Shuowen Jiezi explains it as the belt used for binding official seals or ribbons.
Biography of Zhai Fangjin in the Book of Han (Hanshu) mentions a red ribbon and belt.
Commentary: Fu Qian states that a belt is what we call a ribbon today. Yan Shigu says that the term signifies binding, referring to receiving it in a reverse manner.
Records of Carriages and Clothing in the Book of Later Han (Hou Hanshu) state: from the level of blue ribbons and above, the length of the belt is three feet and two inches. The term refers to the ancient pendants. Since the pendant and ribbon are received by one another, it is called by this name.
Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) also records a variant form.
