Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) defines this as fermenting. Producing wine is called niàng.
Guangyun states it means to brew wine.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Lord Mengchang: Then he brewed much wine and bought fat oxen.
Records of the Grand Historian, Biographies of Money-makers: In major cities and large metropolises, the sale of wine can reach one thousand batches in one year.
Book of Han (Hanshu), Treatise on Food and Money: One batch of brewing uses two hu of coarse rice and one hu of yeast, producing six hu and six dou of wine.
Zengyun states that later generations therefore referred to wine as niàng.
A New Account of Tales of the World (Shishuo Xinyu): Liu Tan said: Seeing He Cidao drink makes one want to pour out all the wine in one's house.
