Pronounced mi (falling tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states it is a riddle. Yan Fanlu states that the word mi (riddle) did not exist in ancient times. If one traces its original meaning and form, it corresponds to what Wu Ju and Dongfang Shuo called hidden meanings. By the time of the Collected Works of Bao Zhao (Baozhao Ji), the term well-riddle had already appeared. The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons (Wenxin Diaolong) notes that since the Wei dynasty, people have often criticized jesters, and thus the hidden meanings of gentlemen evolved into riddles. A riddle is a way of twisting and intertwining language to leave people confused.
Also pronounced mi.
According to the Lei Pian (Categorized Compendium), it refers to words that confuse or mislead. Sometimes also written in a variant form (mi).
