According to the Expanded Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun) and the Collected Rimes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is the same as mei.
The Explanation of Script and Elucidation of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as a monster formed from a spirit that has existed for many years. The character is composed of ghost and the classifier representing long hair (shan). It is sometimes written in a variant form (mei).
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Office of Spring (Chunguan) records: On the day of the summer solstice, summon the earth spirits and the spirits of all things.
