Pronounced mou. According to Explaining Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), ten bundles of hemp. Another source states it refers to being tightly bound. Book of Odes (Shijing), Bin Airs: Tightly binding the windows. Commentary: Choumu means firmly knotted. Zhuangzi, Zeyang: The sage understands profound principles. Sound and Meaning: Choumu is like being knotted. Another interpretation is that it refers to something profound.

Pronounced jiu. Book of Rites (Liji), Tan Gong: Wearing mourning clothes and tying a twisted hemp belt. Commentary: Mu means to not allow it to be twisted or hanging down. Sub-commentary: A twisted hemp band refers to twisting hemp into a mourning sash. History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Biography of Empress Zhao Xiaocheng: She hanged herself. Commentary: Shigu says that mu means to strangle.

Also, in Zhongni Yanju: If there is an error regarding the rites, one cannot compose poetry. Commentary: Mu means error. History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Biography of Sima Xiangru: The magistrate of Linqiong feigned respect. Commentary: Mu means deception. Also, in the Biography of Yu Dingguo: Why is it contrary to this extent? Commentary: Mu means to go against.
A surname. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Master Shen: Master Mu of Lanling. Commentary: Suoyin says the Mu clan originated in Lanling. Zhengzitong states that the current surname Mu is pronounced miao due to a sound change, not the original pronunciation.
