Zi Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Bird (niǎo) Page 140, Entry 09 Pronounced mò bái, same as "mài" (falling tone). Refers to a bird startled and looking around. Also pronounced mò bǐ, same as "mì" (falling tone). Pan Yue's "Ode to Shooting Pheasants" writes: "Eyes not turning with the body, glancing askance in vigilance. Without hearing sound, startled; without seeing anything, flying off on their own." The commentary states: Eyes not looking in coordination with the body is contrary to the body's movement.
