Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Office of the Summer: The Great Minister of War executes the nine penalties; if the laws are ignored and internal or external order is disrupted, or if the people behave like birds and beasts, they are extinguished.
Commentary: To destroy their ancestral temples and altars of soil and grain is called mie.
Also means to sink or disappear.
Book of Changes (Yijing), Great Excess (Dàguò): Crossing the stream, it goes over one's head.
Also means to extinguish fire.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Pan Geng: Like a fire spreading across the plain, it cannot be approached, yet it may still be beaten out and extinguished.
