According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), gathered rhymes (Jiyun), and collected rhymes (Yunhui), the character is pronounced mian (falling tone). According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is also pronounced mian (falling tone).
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to ground wheat flour.
In the Rhapsody on Flour (Mianfu) by Shu Xi, it is written: Flour from the finest sifting, as light as flying dust and white as snow.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), the people of Shu make flour from the shavings of the arenga palm wood.
According to the Expanded Glossaries (Guangya), it is referred to as flour. It is sometimes incorrectly written as a variant form (mian).
