Tang Rhymes (Tangyun): Pronounced meng. Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced meng. Jade Chapters (Yupen): Refers to a fledgling water bird that has not yet grown feathers. Wide Rhymes (Guangyun): Also refers to the Meng bird. Liu Xinqi's Records of Jiaozhou (Jiaozhou Zhi): The Meng is a water bird. It is found in Jiuzhen and Jiaozhi; it is as large as a peacock, with a beak over a foot long, and the people of the south use it as a drinking vessel. Zhu Zhen's Account of Mount Luofu (Luofu Shan Shu): The Meng does not eat fish but subsists on tree leaves; its droppings resemble frankincense and are used in medicine to treat various sores. It is also known as the Diao, meaning large. Common usage led to the creation of this character. It is also called crane-crest. Records of Red Lead (Danqian Lu): The Meng is the crane-crest, which is commonly used to make cups.
