According to the Guangyun (Guǎngyùn) and Jiyun (Jíyùn), the pronunciation is mang (level tone). Wumang is the name of a mountain located in the Shu region. The Zhengzitong (Zhèngzìtōng) states that there is no mountain named Mang in the Shu region; however, among the Southwestern Yi tribes, there is the Ranmang tribe, whose territory corresponds to the modern-day Songpan region of Sichuan. During the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, the Dan and Mang regions were opened up, and Wenshan Commandery was established. This became Song Prefecture during the Tang Dynasty and was renamed Mao Prefecture during the Song Dynasty.
Textual Research: The Zhengzitong claims there is no mountain named Mang in the Shu region and suggests that among the Southwestern Yi tribes there is the Danmang tribe, corresponding to modern-day Songpan, Sichuan. Under Emperor Wu of Han, Danmang was made into Wenshan Commandery.
Note: Upon examining the Records of the Grand Historian (Shǐjì) and the Book of Han (Hànshū), the character Dan is consistently written as Ran. Based on this, Dan has been corrected to Ran.
