"Shuowen Jiezi" explains: It means to look down upon, that is, to steal a glance. "Guang Yun" explains: It is the appearance of looking. Also rhymes with mo po (rising tone), same pronunciation as "mo". Yang Xiong's "Tai Xuan Jing" contains: "Banners hang like fine gauze, weapons clash like moths." "Shi Yunyan zhi, ku qie nian." The annotation explains: "Nian" means to steal a glance. The original character in "Shuowen Jiezi" is written as 䁲. "Ji Yun" sometimes also writes it as 䚑.
