In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), the character lin (granary) is the original form. The character structure consists of entering and returning, resembling a house. It contains doors and windows in the center, used to prevent stored grain from becoming damp or heating up. The Summary of the Six Writings (Liushu Lue) records: those that are square are called cang (storehouse), while those that are round are called lin (granary). The top part of the character resembles its lid.
