Correcting Errors in the Six Writings (Liushu Zheng'e): This is the ancient form of the character for ritual. Later generations found it easily confused with the character for abundant, and because rituals are important in sacrificial offerings, the altar radical was added to distinguish it. All characters such as those for a river name or sweet wine adopt this component.
