Pronounced lin (falling tone). Name of a tree. According to the River Rhapsody (Jiangfu) by Guo Pu: The Lin trees grow densely along the river banks. According to the Materia Medica (Bencao): The Lin tree, also known as Tan, grows in the deep mountains of the south. Burning it to ash and leaching the water allows one to obtain a liquid used for brewing wine, primarily used to treat abdominal masses. It can also be used for dyeing. Also, according to the Classified Chapters (Leipian): The tree bark is called Lin.
