Kangxi Dictionary

Zi Collection, Upper Volume, Page 20, Entry 02 Radical: Grass (cǎo) Pronounced li (falling tone) Also from "Tang Yun" and "Ji Yun", pronounced li (falling tone). "Shuowen" states it is a type of grass. It can be used to dye a lasting yellow color. "Jijiu Pian Zhu" says "li" is the color of aged mugwort. There is a type of grass in the Eastern Sea called "pei", and when used to dye this color, it is therefore named "li". Verification: [From "Jijiu Pian Zhu", "using it to dye this color, therefore the color is called li".] The original text has been amended from "therefore the color" to "therefore the name".
