Pronounced lei (level tone). In the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), the pronunciation is described as lei. In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is described as lei. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is a vehicle used by Yu the Great for traveling in mountains. In the Book of Documents (Shujing), specifically in the Yi and Ji chapter, it states: I rode upon four types of conveyances. The commentary notes that for mountain travel, one uses a lei. The Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) writes this as qiao. The Book of Han (Hanshu) writes this as ju. It refers to wooden footwear fitted with iron spikes on the underside.
