Pronounced lao. A type of conch. In the Classic of Poetry (Erya), section Explaining Fish, it is stated: Among the species of small crabs, the smaller ones are called lao. Refer to the note under the character for crab.
Also, in the Classified Compilation (Leipian), it is the name of an insect, a small cicada. In the Jade Chapter (Yupian), it is written as di lao. In the Dialect (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong, it is noted: Regarding the grasshopper, from the mountain passes eastward, it is called the di lao, or sometimes the di lao. The commentator Guo Pu notes: People in the Jiangdong region call it the xiao lao.
Also, pronounced liao. Same as the character liao.
