Zi Collection, Page Position: Lower, Radical: Strength (lì) Kangxi strokes: 12; Page 148 Ancient script. According to the Tang Rhymes (Tángyùn) and Jiyun (Jíyùn), pronounced láo. Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) says: strenuous. Composed of Strength (lì) and a shortened form of yíng. One who expends strength is láo. Erya (Ěryǎ), Explanation of Words, states: láo means diligent. Annotation: "Similar to work." Also, worry. Cao Pi's (Cáo Pī) Letter to Wu Zhi (Wú Zhì): "Not enough to untie his knot of anxiety." Annotation: "Refers to a knot of worry in the heart." Also a surname. Guangyun (Guǎngyùn) states: During the Later Han dynasty, there was Lángyé Láo Bǐng. Also, according to the Tang Rhymes, Jiyun, Yunhui (Yùnhuì), and Zheng Rhymes (Zhèngyùn), pronounced láo (fourth tone). Guangyun states: láo means to comfort. In the Book of Rites, Summary of Rules of Propriety: "When the ruler comforts him, he bows." Yunhui states: "To comfort means to acknowledge one's diligence in response."
