Original Explanations of Characters (Shuowen): Originally written as the character with the wood radical, referring to a ritual grain vessel. Derived from the wood radical, with the phonetic element lian. Sometimes written as lian.
Book of Rites (Liji), Mingtangwei: The Xia dynasty used four lian, the Shang dynasty used six hu, and the Zhou dynasty used eight gui vessels.
Analects (Lunyu): A hu-lian vessel. Commentary: A container for millet used in ancestral temples.
