According to the Compendium of Rhymes (Yunhui), it refers to a vehicle, a pair, or a count of vehicles.
According to the Commentary on the Book of Han (Hanshu zhu), one vehicle is called one liang, implying that its wheels and shafts are paired together.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), in the section Zhou Nan: With a hundred carriages (liang) to escort her.
Commentary: A hundred liang means a hundred vehicles.
Sub-commentary: One vehicle is considered one liang.
According to the Comprehensive Customs (Fengsu tong): A vehicle has two wheels and four horses, therefore a vehicle is called a liang and a horse is called a pi (a unit for horses).
