Pronounced liàng. Same meaning as the character liàng (to believe/trust). Indicates integrity or trustworthiness. Mencius (Mengzi): If a superior person is not trustworthy, what can they maintain? Old Poems Nineteen Pieces (Gushi Shijiu Shou): You truly uphold noble virtues, so why must I do anything? Also indicates brightness. Also a surname. Also pronounced liáng. Book of Documents (Shangshu), Sayings of Yue (Yue Ming): Liàng yīn, which means liáng àn (a period of mourning). Orthodox Character Guide (Zhengzitong): The character liàng is formed with the component for human (ér) at the bottom. If changed to the table component (jī), it is incorrect. The original form of the character liàng was composed of the lid, mouth, cover, and human components.
