In the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is noted that the character is a variant form of liao, using the meat radical with the abbreviated sound of lao.
According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it refers to the fat between the intestines.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: Take its blood and fat.
The commentary states: Liao is the fat from between the intestines.
In the Book of Rites (Liji), it is written: Take the sacrificial fat and roast it to lift up the head, to repay the Yang.
The commentary states: The fat from between the intestines.
In the Odes for the Suburban Sacrifices from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is written: Burn the fat with artemisia, extending to the four directions.
The commentary by Shigu says: Liao, pronounced liao, is the fat between the intestines. Use artemisia to burn the fat and combine them for fragrance.
