Page 475, Entry 05
Pronounced liao.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is written as liao, meaning to select. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means to arrange. In the Book of Documents (Shujing), specifically the Speech at Fei (Feishi), it states, "Properly repair your armor and helmets." The commentary states that this means one should properly repair one's armor and helmets. The sub-commentary states that the term refers to threading through; if the cords of the armor are broken, one must properly repair and thread them. Note that common editions of the Book of Documents contain errors in the character, and the Dictionary of Characters (Zihui) also contains errors, which are incorrect.
Also according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced liao. The meaning is the same. The character was originally written with the radical for tap. The character should be written with the element for scholar, not with the element for above.
Textual research: The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) originally wrote it as to wave; strictly following the original text, it has been corrected from to wave to to select.
