Yu Pian (Jade Chapters) records that this is an ancient character form for the character Liang. For a detailed annotation, see the section containing six strokes. The Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Explaining Simple and Analyzing Compound Characters) explains that the character is composed of the radicals Down Box (jiōng) and Enter (rù). Xu Xuan adds that it is formed by two instances of the character for Enter (rù). This character form originally represented the word for twice or repetition, written as Liang. In contemporary classical literature, it is now exclusively written as the character Liang.
