Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) says: To be thin. The editorial note by Chen Xuan and others says: Sheep are meant for provisioning and food, and to be thin is considered a defect, therefore it is formed with the radical for sheep.
Also, from the Book of Changes (Yijing), in the Dazhuang hexagram: A ram butts a fence, and entangles its horns. The commentary states: To entangle means to restrain, bind, and wind around.
Also, from the Book of Changes (Yijing), in the Jing hexagram: It breaks its pitcher, ominous. The commentary states: It means to hook and entangle the pitcher so that it overturns.
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced lian. In this sense, it refers to the name of a county, located in Jiaozhi. Sometimes written in a variant form.
