Pronounced lei (level tone)
According to the Collection of Rhymes (Guangyun), it is pronounced lei (level tone). According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Compendium of Rhymes (Yunhui), it is pronounced lei (level tone). In the Categorized Lexicon (Leipian), it is noted that the character lei (in its variant form) is sometimes written as lei.
In the Analects (Lunyu), it is said, "Even when in black ropes and bonds." The commentary states that lei refers to black ropes. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), specifically the Author's Preface, it is written, "Imprisoned in black ropes and bonds."
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced luo (level tone). It refers to a large rope.
