Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): To flash or peek. It refers to leaning the head to look through a gate. Composed of the radical for gate and the component for rule or circle, which carries both the semantic and phonetic essence.
Guangyun: To look narrowly.
Jiyun: Interchangeable with the character for peek (kui).
Book of Changes (Yijing), Guan hexagram: To peek and observe; beneficial for the woman's divination. Commentary: What is seen is narrow, therefore it is called peeking and observing. Sub-commentary: To observe by peeking stealthily.
Again, in the Feng hexagram: To peek at the household door. Sub-commentary: To peek at and observe the door.
Book of Rites (Liji), Evolution of Rites: The eggs and fetuses of other birds and beasts can all be peered at by bending down.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Assassins: To tempt by peeking with heavy profit.
Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Biography of Li Gu: The people of Qin did not dare to peek with troops at the western river.
