Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Feng Tang: Regarding matters within the threshold, the sovereign controls them. Commentary: This is the threshold of the outer gate; the short wooden post in the doorway is called kun.
Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), Master’s Capping Ceremony: Placing the mat in the middle of the gate, west of the doorpost and outside the threshold. Commentary: The threshold is the kun.
Book of Changes (Yijing), Shi Hexagram Commentary: Affairs outside the state gate are decided by the general, who acts according to the situation and does not necessarily need to follow the commands of the sovereign.
