According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced ke, the reading is the same as the word for thirsty. The combination of the first character with the second describes the appearance of mountains. It also refers to the high, precipitous, and steep nature of mountain rocks. In the Southern Capital Rhapsody (Nandu Fu) by Zhang Heng, it is written that the mountains are kong and long and ge. In the Poem Expressing Thoughts (Yonghuai Shi) by Du Fu, it is written that the music moves like the swaying and rising of mountains. According to the Correct Character Guide (Zhengzitong), it is sometimes written in a variant form (jiao ge). The meaning is the same. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), the character is identical to the second character mentioned above. However, as the two characters are used together in the rhapsody by Zhang Heng, they do not appear to be homophones. The Correct Character Guide changes the pronunciation to ge, identical to the word for kudzu, and treats it as interchangeable with the variant form. This seems acceptable to follow. Textual research: The Southern Capital Rhapsody by Zhang Heng contains these characters. According to the Jade Chapters, the characters are identical. However, in the rhapsody by Zhang, the characters are used together, so they do not appear to be homophones. It is noted that the previous citation refers to the Southern Capital Rhapsody by Zhang Heng; therefore, the mention of the Yang rhapsody should be corrected to the Zhang rhapsody, changing the word Yang to Zhang.
