Jade Chapter (Yupian) defines it as a harmonious and pleasant sound. Additionally, Supplement to the Dictionary of Characters (Zihui bu) defines it as the name of a musical instrument. Wu Jing states in Explanatory Titles of Music Bureau Poetry (Yuefu jieti): After Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty pacified Nanyue, he offered sacrifices to the Grand Unity god and the Earth god. He ordered the musician Hou Hui to create a kanhou based on the shape of a zither. Because the craftsman was surnamed Hou, the instrument was named kanhou. Later, through transmission, it was mistakenly pronounced as konghou.
