Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): A pitfall, used for capturing animals. Also defined as digging into the ground to trap animals.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Speech at Fei: Secure your traps, collect your pits.
Commentary: A pit is used to capture small animals by digging a deep hole in the ground so that they fall in and cannot escape. It does not utilize a mechanical device on the top, which differs slightly from a wooden trap (huo).
