Naming Meaning

Pronounced ju (ǐ tone) in Guangyun, and gong (yū tone) in Jiyun and Yunhui, with the same pronunciation and meaning as "ju." Explained in Shuowen Jiezi as to scoop up. Explained in Boya as to draw up. Explained in Yupian as to pour wine. In the "Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes," it says, "One cannot scoop wine," and the Mao Commentary annotates: "Yi" means "fu." The "Rites (Yili), Ceremony of Capping for Scholars, Commentary" mentions: scooping wine from a vessel with a ladle is the process of "fu" wine. Also used interchangeably with the character "chou." In the "Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes," there is "Bin zai shou chou," with the annotation: "chou" here has the same pronunciation and meaning as "fu."
