Wei Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Bamboo (zhú) Jian Kangxi strokes: 13 Page 885, Entry 12 Pronounced jian (falling tone). A bamboo pipe used to lead water. According to the Record of the Stone Casket (Shihan Ji) by Bai Juyi: On the north side of West Lake, there is a stone casket, and on the south side, there is a pipe (jian) to release water for irrigating fields; such small pipes must be blocked and sealed when not in use for irrigation. On the south side of that pipe, there was formerly a breach in the embankment; if the water rose violently at the stone casket and discharged through the southern pipe, the levee would collapse. Also pronounced dian (rising tone). Also pronounced xian (falling tone). A type of bamboo.
