Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Pronounced jiao. Bei jiao, in ancient times made of jade.
Categorized Texts (Leipian): An instrument used by shamans to divine good or bad fortune.
Extended General Records (Yanfanlu): Bei jiao are made from two pieces of clam shell or bamboo roots. Sometimes also written in a variant form (jiao).
Chronicles of Jing and Chu Customs (Jingchu Suishiji): During the autumn sacrifice, throwing jiao to the gods to divine fortunes.
