Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen): A loud sound. Another meaning is to shout loudly. Composed of the mouth component, with jiu as the phonetic indicator. The Gongyang Commentary (Gongyang Zhuan) states: Duke Zhao cried out loudly. Note: In the current Gongyang Commentary (Gongyang Zhuan), Annals of Duke Zhao, Year 25, it is written as jiao (to call out) and wept.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Spring Officials, Chicken Official: Responsible for managing the supply of sacrificial chickens, distinguishing their types, and calling out at night to awaken all officials at daybreak.
Also, in the Erya, Explanations of Music: A large xun flute is called a jiao. Commentary: The sound is as loud as a shout.
In Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is written as jiao. The character jiao is written with the sound component in the middle.
