Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), Standard Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced jiu.
Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): A type of bird. Black in color, produces many offspring. Master Kuang stated: In the south there is a bird called the Qiangjiu, with a yellow head, red eyes, and endowed with all five colors.
Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao): The vulture is fierce and powerful, circling in the sky, observing everything no matter how small; it is the white eagle. Sometimes also written in a variant form (jiu).
Also, Lingjiu, the name of a mountain. Records of the Western Regions (Xiyuji): Mount Gridhrakuta has two peaks standing side by side. Vultures often inhabit its ridges, and from a distance, the mountain resembles the shape of a vulture, hence it is named Mount Lingjiu.
