Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun) state it is pronounced jiong. It means to stoop or hunch.
Jia Yi (Jia Yi): Owl Rhapsody (Fufu) states: Stooping as if restrained and bound.
Su Lin's commentary states: It refers to a person with hunched shoulders.
Selections of Refined Literature (Wenxuan): Li Shan's commentary states: Qiong is the appearance of being restrained or bound.
Five Scholars' commentary states: Qiong means to be distressed. The ignorant are tied and bound by worldly attachments, distressed like a prisoner in confinement.
Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui) and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun) state it is also written in the variant form (jiong).
