Pronounced jiao (falling tone). According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is similar to jiao (falling tone). Defined in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) as meaning to exhaust.
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is similar to jiao (rising tone). It is the same as the character variant (qiao). Defined in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) as meaning to strain or filter wine. Another interpretation is to clear, to ladle out, or to exhaust.
