Pronounced jian (falling tone), same as "jian". "Shuowen Jiezi" explains it as water flowing between two mountains. There is a sentence in "Book of Odes (Shijing), Shao Nan" that reads "in the middle of the stream". It also refers to the name of a river. "Book of Documents (Shangshu), Yu Gong" records the Yi River, Luo River, Chan River, and Jian River. Also, "Records of the Grand Historian (Qian Hanshu), Treatise on Geography" records: The Jian River originates in Jincheng Commandery, and is now located outside the frontier northwest of Ju County. Pronounced jian (falling tone), same as "jian". The meaning is the same as mentioned above. Another variant form is written as "jian".
