According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced hang. The Extensive Rhyme (Guangyun) states it refers to a boat. The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) states it refers to two boats joined together. The Master's Arts instruction of the Huainanzi (Huainanzi) states: A wise ruler employs people just as a skilled craftsman works with wood; the large pieces are used as boats, masts, or beams. The commentary notes: Joining two small boats together to cross a river is called a hang. Zhang Heng's Rhapsody on Thoughts (Si Fu) states: Like standing by a river without a ferry. Additionally, the Supplement to the Collection of Characters (Zihui bu) notes Yuhang, a place name, which is modern Yuhang. It is also commonly written as hang. The Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wey, states: Who says the river is wide? A single reed can ferry across it. The commentary notes: Hang means to cross.
