Supplement to the Compendium of Characters (Zihui Bu) states that it is the same as the character hao (meaning to consume). The School Sayings of Confucius (Jiayi) records: The people of the huan land are coarse. The commentary explains: Saline-alkali soil is called huan. Another explanation is: It refers to soil that is rough and loose.
