Pronounced huang. The pronunciation is the same as huang. Explanations in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) state that it refers to a vast expanse of water. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it also means to reach or to arrive at. Furthermore, the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) cites the phrase bao huang from the Book of Changes (Yijing). Note: In present times, the hexagram Tai is written with the character for huang, but in ancient times, the two characters were used interchangeably.
