Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Dictionary of Pronunciations (Yunhui), Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced huan. In the Erya: Explanations of Animals (Erya Shishou), it says that a male wolf is called huan, and a female is called lang. The sub-commentary states: For the wolf, the male is named huan, and the female is called lang. According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it is a wild pig. The Zhengzitong states: The dog-huan is what people in Shu call the heavenly dog; it resembles a small, fat dog. Li Shizhen says: The tuan is a pig-huan. The huan is a dog-huan. The two types are similar but slightly different. In Liaodong there is a sea-huan, whose fur can be used for fur collars. Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced quan. The meaning is the same. The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) also records it written as variant forms (huan) and (tuan). It is commonly used interchangeably with the character (huan).
