Yupian explains it as "to open one's eyes wide and look." Furthermore, the Yangzi's Taixuanjing (Tai Xuan Jing) records: "Jìn yú xuè, cì zì féi yě." The commentary explains that cì means to examine oneself and be self-satisfied. Additionally, Zuo Si's Wei Du Fu (Wei Du Fu) writes: "Cì yān xiāng gù." The commentary explains that cì means to fear. Jiyun records that this character is the same as the character lù.
