Kangxi Dictionary

Zi Collection, Page Position: Upper. Radical: Tree (mù). Page 540, Entry 03. According to the Sound Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is hua. It sounds the same as hua. The Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as a type of double-edged spade. The character structure is derived from tree and the phonetic component, making it a pictographic character. This is the original form of the character for plowshare, which is referred to as rong in the Song and Wei regions. Sometimes it is also written in the variant forms of yue or hua, which carry the same meaning.
